A consistent perturbation theory of elastic anomalies near a structural phase transition is worked out in the case of a two-components order-parameter. The case of incommensurate phase transitions is particularly emphasized and it is found that the phason contribution to ultrasonic attenuation is a very small effect, even when this mode is gap-less, in contradiction with a previously published theory.
