The yield stress of Ni$_3$AI can be greatly increased by the addition of various ternary alloying elements. Some of these cause a more or less uniform strengthening over a range of temperatures, e.g. B., while others like Hf cause strengthening at low temperatures and a more rapid increase in the flow stress with temperature, i.e. the flow stress anomaly is increased by Hf, but not by B. The strengthening of Ni$_3$AI by these two elements is interpreted in forms of a combination of solid solution hardening and cross-slip hardening. It is shown that Hf appears to strengthen Ni$_3$AI by a combination of solid solution hardening and increased cross-slip (leading to a decreased activation energy for cross-slip), while B appears to only strength...
