Criteria allowing non-destructive determination of leaf rank throughout the season are presented. In the beginning, the first leaf and later on, the fifth leaf can be directly identified by length of lamina and height of collar (above soil level). When the fifth leaf disappears, determination of leaf rank is based on identification of the node where leaf 5 was inserted. Position (relative to soil level) of nodes 4, 5, 6 and relative length of the 5 lower aerial internodes allow identification. Observation of underground parts of the stem and roots, and more especially number and diameter of adventitious roots and position of nodes 4 and 5 relative to the stem tip allows further identification, but the method is destructive.Détermination du ...
