We used a plant-soil model, G'DAY, to analyse changes in soil N supply after conversion of legume-based pasture to Eucalyptus globulus plantation and to forecast effects on plantation productivity over the long-term. With the model we reproduced the observed decline in net N mineralisation and amount of inorganic N in soil after one rotation of eucalypt growth in south-western Australia. The changes in soil N cycling on the short-term were mainly due to the reduced N:C ratio and reduced decomposability of tree litter.
