A survey is given on thermal gas lens developments and of their principles and applications for focusing and guidance of intense laser beam. The generalized analysis of typical thermo-optical systems is used to relate the gas density distribution to characteristic features of thermal gas lens designs in accordance with various thermo-gasdynamic conditions.
