It has been previously shown that the formation of Guinier-Preston zones in aluminium-magnesium alloys is accompanied by an increase of the velocities of ultrasonic waves, and a decrease of attenuation. This paper is an attempt to explain quantitatively these variations. It is shown that the coherence strain of the crystalline lattice of the depleted matrix induces a decrease of velocity in the matrix, and to explain the measured increase high elastic properties must be attributed to zones. The model used leads to an increase of velocity proportionnal to the fractional volume of the zones.
