Corrosion of niobium in various acid and alkaline media, at room temperature, has been studied using electrochemical methods. An electrolytic polishing method is developed in order to obtain a well defined reproductible surface. The good resistance of niobium in acidic solutions, except fluorhydric acid, has been attributed to a protective film of niobium oxide. Preliminary results have been obtained on the anodic behaviour of niobium in deaerated sodium hydroxide.
