The mechanical strength of current glasses falls far below the maximum theoretical values ; it is conditionned by brittle fracture and static fatigue. This paper is intended to serve as an introduction to the study of these aspects of the mechanical properties of glasses. After a brief review of the Inglis-Griffith flaw theory, the modern point of view using Irwin's fracture dynamics is described. Stress-concentration factor KI and the critical KIC are defined and their relationship with surface fracture energy after Orowan is given. Methods of determining these quantities are indicated.
