Measurements of the mean ionization energy W, of α particles have been carried out in pure Ar and Kr, in the binary mixtures Ar-CH4, Ar-Kr, Kr-CH4, Ar-H2, and in the ternary mixtures Ar-CH 4-H2 and Ar-CH4-Kr. The law giving the changes in W established for binary mixtures, is satisfactorily obeyed in the case of the Ar-H2 mixture. In the same concentration range, the same law can be applied to the Ar-CH4-H2 mixture if the Ar-CH4 mixture is considered as a single component. The results obtained in Ar-Kr and Ar-CH4-Kr mixtures show that the krypton and methane behave differently with respect to the various excited states of the argon atom.
