The chemical analysis of a very small area of a specimen requires simultaneous observation of this specimen at a convenient magnification. On the electron microscopy scale, two methods have been applied with thin film specimens : — Spectroscopy of transmitted electrons : the energy losses of these electrons give a characteristic spectrum, which depends on the nature of the absorbing element or compound. For this purpose a velocity filter has to be attached to a conventional electron microscope. — X-emission microanalysis, in a combined electron microscope-electron probe micro-analyser.
