The sum over intermediate states in the general quantum mechanical expression for the Raman tensor is removed by replacing the different resonance denominators between the ground and intermediate states with one average denominator. This procedure leads to a substantial simplification of the formulas which allows one to compute quantitative estimates of the Raman tensor without employing the dipole approximation.
