It is shown that the simple threshold theory of damage gives an excellent description of the major features of irradiation induced changes provided the energy of recoil atoms is quite low. As the energy of the recoil atoms increases, the agreement with theory becomes worse. The simple theory also does not take into account the role of crystal structure in the propogation of energy and interstitials atoms. The importance of such lattice effects has been demonstrated experimentally and attempts have been made to calculate them both analytically and numerically.
