Differential and total cross sections for production of the 4.43 MeV gamma ray in nucleon inelastic scattering by 12C (E < 9 MeV) have been evaluated on the basis of the statistical model and of the Satchler formalism. Width fluctuation correction has been included. The application of the statistical model to such a light nucleus is only justified by the fact that the computed total cross sections represent the average value of the experimental results and therefore permit to estimate the relative contributions of compound nucleus formation and direct interaction to the cross section. In addition, analysis of the 4.43 MeV γ-ray angular distribution near resonances permits to propose spin and parity for 3 unassigned levels in 13C.Les section...
