Fluorescence relaxation of carbon monoxide, optically excited on the first vibrational level, has been studied by chopping the excitation radiation ; the relaxation time has been measured for different values of gas pressure up to 450 Torr ; it is found to be longer than the radiative lifetime (0.033 s) and rises up to 0.25 s. This may be due to the trapping of the fluorescence radiation by reabsorption.
