The local structure within the ionic aggregates of a carboxylato-telechelic ionomer neutralized with an excess of zirconium has been investigated by EXAFS spectroscopy. The presence of non-ionic Zr-O-Zr intramolecular bonds explains the great stability of the material towards polar compounds. The number of Zr neighbours in the aggregates has been found to increase with the total amount of zirconium in the sample.
