At rest 7Be decays to 7Li through electron capture with a 53.6 d half-life. Hence the lifetime of this isotope is dépendent on the electron density about the nucleus. It has been suggested that, in galactic cosmic rays 7Be would be very long lived. The comparison of our recent cross-section measurements for the production of Li, Be, B by spallation of 12C and 16O by high energy protons with the elemental ratios Be/Li and Be/B found in cosmic rays leads to the conclusion that 7Be is stable in this radiation.
