BACKGROUND: Recorded incidence of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia tends to be lower in poorer communities. A 'preemptive infection hypothesis' proposes that some children with leukaemia die from infection without diagnosis of leukaemia. Various different blood abnormalities can occur in untreated leukaemia.
