Metamaterials can exhibit electromagnetic characteristics beyond those found in nature. In this letter, we demonstrate that Surface Whispering-gallery mode (SWGM) can be generated by coating a microresonator with a layer of metamaterials. Different from WGM, whose waves are mostly confined within the microresonator, the SWGM propagate at the interface between the ambient substance and the metamaterials, rendering the microresonator much more sensitive to a slight change in surrounding medium. Such unusual characteristics, well explained by the guided wave theory and validated by full wave simulation, may lead to novel applications in optics
