Hippocampal sclerosis is the most common abnormality associated with medial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE). Converging evidence supports that hippocampal sclerosis progresses with time. However, it is unclear whether extrahippocampal atrophy in patients with MTLE, similarly to hippocampal sclerosis, is an unremitting progressive process.
