The interactions of ultrashort laser pulses with planar metal targets are investigated theoretically. The electron temperature as a function of time is derived based on the one-dimensional, two-temperature diffusion model. The valid range of laser duration under the approximation of ultrashort pulses and an expression of the attainable highest electron temperature for the ultrashort pulses laser heating have been obtained
