On décrit un modèle d'électrons collectifs pour rendre compte du comportement de la magnétite à basse température. On présente un calcul par la méthode « tight-binding » dans lequel on introduit des paramètres d'ordre abaissant la symétrie afin de décrire la structure électronique à basse température. On explique ainsi directement les spectres Mössbauer observés récemment dans la magnétite.
