On montre ensuite que dans une couche de j élevé la perte de recouvrement angulaire entre les orbites des nucléons, résultant du principe d'exclusion, entraîne l'existence de structures à 2 protons-2 neutrons en faible interaction entre elles. Une estimation de l'effet est faite en analysant les masses nucléaires.
