On décrit les mécanismes physiques qui sont responsables de la forme des cristaux. La transition rugueuse d'une face cristalline donnée intervient lorsque l'énergie libre d'une marche s'annule sur cette surface. En dessous de cette transition, des facettes de dimensions finies coexistent avec des portions arrondies de la surface. Près de la frontière d'une facette, la forme du cristal est déterminée par une interaction longue portée entre marches due aux fluctuations. Une méthode simple est présentée qui fait usage d'une matrice de transfert et permet d'obtenir la loi en puissance 3/2 de la forme du cristal au voisinage de la frontière (la courbure diverge).
