Taking in consideration two leading high capacity optical access technologies, this paper presents a simple cost comparison between GPON and EPON platforms, exposing their major characteristics, making a comparative analysis to find the advantages and disadvantages between these two technologies. The work includes studies on the economic and technical feasibility of implementing a passive optical network; and the choice of valid economic and technical arguments when establishing, planning, or expanding such networks in a given region.
