On essaie de caractériser les états de Rydberg de molécules linéaires par un nombre quantique principal n et un défaut quantique διλ qui dépend du moment orbital angulaire [MATH] et de sa projection [MATH] sur l'axe internucléaire. Les raisons pour des écarts à ce modèle simple sont discutées. D'autres critères pour l'attribution des états de Rydberg moléculaires sont mentionnés. Une série de méthodes de détection des niveaux de Rydberg est présentée.
