Nous présentons un résumé des caractéristiques de performance du Free Electron Laser (FEL) de l'Université de Californie - Santa Barbara (UCSB) qui est en opération depuis août 1984. Ce FEL utilise des accélérateurs électrostatiques à faible tension de même pour les guides d'électron et il est spécialement adapté pour la production d'une grande efficacité et d'une puissance moyenne importante dans la région spectrale de infrarouge lointain. L'accordabilité de ce laser unique en son genre recouvre une région spectrale où aucune autre source comparable n'existe et par conséquent le UCSB-FEL peut être utilisé comme source de lumière pour étudier les propriétés statiques et dynamiques des excitations élémentaires dans des phases condensées.
