De nouveaux résultats expérimentaux ont été obtenus récemment sur la structure atomique des joints de grains et des interfaces. Les différentes techniques donnant des renseignements à l'échelle atomique sont exposées : la microscopie électronique à haute résolution, la microscopie à émission de champ, la microscopie tunnel et la diffraction de rayons-X. La comparaison de ces résultats avec les modélisations sur ordinateur et le lien avec les propriétés des joints ont été menés à bien dans quelques cas particuliers.
