Myasthenia gravis (MG) is one of the best understood autoantibody-mediated disorders. The pathogenic antibodies against the acetylcholine receptor (AChR) have been well characterized and are known to impair neuromuscular transmission by direct blockade, complement mediated damage and accelerate receptor-mediated endocytosis. The clinical presentation is characterized by fatiguable weakness with a predilection for the extra-ocular, facial, bulbar, respiratory and proximal limb muscles. Diagnosis is confirmed by the presence of antibodies against the AChR or muscle-specific kinase in the serum.
