En tant que sources laser à électrons libres les anneaux de stockage à électrons doivent présenter des performances de faisceaux suffisantes pour obtenir des gains élevés. Les exigences portent tout particulierement sur la longueur et la dispersion en énergie des paquets, l'intensité et l'émittance transverse du faisceau. Afin de mieux apprécier les problèmes liés à de tels projets on se propose de rappeler ici, quoique brièvement, vingt années d'experiences acquises auprès d'anneaux de stockage de petites et moyennes énergies, initialement conçus pour les besoins de la physique des particules élémentaires.
