Des ions 57Fe+(3d6 4s) ont été produits par irradiation UV d'une matrice de xénon contenant 0,65 % de 57Fe. Ces ions ont pu être stabilisés en ajoutant à la matrice environ 1 % de HI jouant le rô1e d'accepteur d'électrons. Le spectre Mössbauer de 57Fe dans la matrice de Xe(HI) mesuré avant l'irradiation UV comporte une seule raie de résonance (Ɖ = 0,70 mm/s) avec un IS de – (0,74 ± 0,02) mm/s par rapport au fer métallique à 300 K. Apres une irradiation UV de 15 h (~ 3 × 1020 photons/cm2) la raie unique d'atomes isolés de 57Fe a complètement disparu.
