The stopping of partially stripped ions by a partially ionized target is investigated for the case of a projectile with an extended electronic core. Long ranged contributions to energy loss are evaluated within an impact parameter theoretical framework. Quantities correcting the standard pointlike results are given in analytical form. They can be substantial for moderate projectile velocity
