Binary block codes have been extensively used for error detection, and among them the most popular is CRC (cyclic redundancy check) codes. Conversely, convolutional codes have been used almost exclusively for error correction. One requirement for the use in error detection is low decoding complexity. In this paper, it is shown that for this specific application the decoding complexity of convolutional codes is virtually equal to the coding complexity, which is very small. By studying the properties of high-rate convolutional codes for error detection, their potential advantages over block codes are shown. In addition, a study of CRC codes is given. Certain general error detection capabilities of the convolutional codes are also derived.22
