Gain-switched and mode-locked semiconductor lasers have been considered as potential optical sources for the generation of microwave and millimetre-wave signals. High frequency harmonics can be obtained from these pulsed semiconductor lasers to transport information, overcoming the bandwidth limitation of direct and external modulation schemes. An understanding of the causes that degrade the noise performance of microwave harmonic signals generated by these sources is presented. © 1995 Taylor & Francis Ltd.10644344
