Deafness: the mothers' reports about the diagnosis

The aim of this study was to analyze mothers' reports about their children's diagnosis of deafness. Based on a qualitative approach, ten hearing mothers of deaf children were interviewed. These mothers and their deaf children had been going to the Centro de Estudos e Pesquisas em Reabilitação in the State of São Paulo for two years or more. The data analysis showed that the news that the child was deaf came as a shock to all mothers. Their reactions usually depended on whether they already suspected deafness, on how the diagnosis was proffered, and on the way the medical professionals transmitted information about hearing impairments. Some mothers expressed ambivalent and contradictory feelings, seeking evidence of normality in their children. Others, over time, showed that they had adapted well to the situation of having a deaf child, having been able to integrate him or her into their lives in general.O objetivo do estudo foi analisar o relato de mães frente ao diagnóstico da surdez de seu filho. Com base em uma abordagem qualitativa, foram entrevistadas dez mães ouvintes com filhos surdos que receberam atendimento especializado por mais de dois anos no Centro de Estudos e Pesquisas em Reabilitação no estado de São Paulo. Na análise dos dados ficou evidenciado que para todas as mães a notícia da surdez foi um choque. As reações das mães dependeram, na maioria das vezes, do quanto elas já suspeitavam da surdez do filho, de quando e como foi feito o diagnóstico, da maneira com que os profissionais da área médica passaram as informações. Algumas mães apresentaram sentimentos ambivalentes, contraditórios, buscando marcas de normalidade na criança. Outras mães demonstraram, com o tempo, uma boa adaptação à situação de ter um filho surdo, conseguindo integrá-lo em sua vida como um todo.17518
