Morphological characterization of five dispersal unities of ornamental species

The morphological characterization of dispersal units is important to help the identification of a botanical specie and there are a deficiency of specialized bibliography which described seeds of ornamental species, independent if they are trees, shrubs or herbaceous plants. Ornamental plants are distinguish by the fowering time, size and colour of the leaves, flowers and inflorescences, as well as appearance and architecture of the plant. Seeds, like most reproductive structures, are relatively stable under varying environmental conditions and their basic internal organization varies only slightly among related species and genera and the differences that do exist may properly be regarded as significant phylogenetically and can be used in the taxonomical identification. The objective of these work was make drawings and descriptions of the external and internal characteristics of the dispersal units, as shape, type, size and embryo position in relation to the storage tissue (endosperm), in order to help the correct identification of two arboreous species: Allophyllus edulis (St.Hil.) Radlk (Sapindaceae) and Erythrina speciosa Andrews (Fabaceae-Papilionoideae), used in the urban arborization; two herbaceous species: Alstoemeria psittacina Lehm. (Amaryllidaceae) and Freesia refracta Klatt (Iridaceae) and one flowering shrub specie: Calliandra tweedii Benth. (Fabaceae-Mimosoideae).A caracterização morfológica de unidades de dispersão é importante para auxiliar na identificação de uma espécie botânica e são poucos os trabalhos que descrevem as sementes das espécies ornamentais, sejam elas árvores, arbustos ou plantas herbáceas. As plantas ornamentais distinguem-se pela duração do florescimento, pela forma e pelo colorido das folhas, das flores e das inflorescências, bem como, pela aparência e arquitetura da planta. Sementes, como a maioria das estruturas reprodutivas, são relativamente estáveis, não variam muito com as condições ambientais, e sua organização básica interna somente varia levemente entre espécies e gêneros relacionados e as diferenças que existem podem ser estimadas como significativas filogeneticamente e ser usadas na identificação taxonômica. O objetivo do trabalho foi ilustrar e descrever as características externas e internas das unidades de dispersão, tais como a forma, o tipo, o tamanho e a posição do embrião em relação ao tecido de reserva, permitindo uma identificação mais segura de duas espécies de plantas arbóreas, a murta-branca (Allophyllus edulis (St.Hil.) Radlk - Sapindaceae) e a eritrina-candelabro (Erythrina speciosa Andrews - Fabaceae-Papilionoideae), usadas na arborização urbana; duas plantas herbáceas, a alstroeméria (Alstoemeria psittacina Lehm. - Amaryllidaceae) e frésia ou frísia (Freesia refracta Klatt. - Iridaceae) e um arbusto florífero, a esponjinha-vermelha ou caliandra (Calliandra tweedii Benth. - Fabaceae-Mimosoideae).111
