Where is Latin America headed? Uneven development in the periphery in the globalization era

The neoliberal hegemony of late last century has overshadowed Latin America's original theoretical approaches such as structuralism and dependency theory. Both neoliberal and "post-dependecy" approaches have postulated that national differences tend to disappear with globalization. This article argues another hypothesis: That instead of a "convergence" between Center and Periphery, a growing bifurcation of the Periphery is taking place. To test this hypothesis, we compare the performance of two regions: East Asia and Latin America.La hegemonía neoliberal a fines del siglo pasado opacó enfoques teóricos originales latinoamericanos, como el estructuralismo y la escuela de la dependencia. Tanto el ideario neoliberal como algunas perspectivas críticas “posdependentistas” han postulado que las diferencias nacionales tienden a perder relevancia en el marco de la globalización. En este artículo se sostiene otra hipótesis: que en lugar de una convergencia entre centro y periferia, se está produciendo una creciente bifurcación de la periferia misma.
