Emigração de valadarenses para os Estados Unidos: um estudo histórico sobre a constituição de redes sociais e sobre a participação das mulheres (1960-2010)

The emigration of Brazilians abroad is a recent phenomenon. The flow starts incipiently on the 60s and intensifies through the 80s. At the turn of the XX century, this migratory phenomenon was already part of the everyday life of thousands of inhabitants of this one and other Brazilian cities such as Criciúma, Maringá, and others. This dissertation tries to analyze the configuration of this flow from the city of Governador Valadares, well known in the world because of its noticeable flux of inhabitants to the United States and, more recently, to Europe. With this migratory movement, Brazil inserts itself in the dynamic of a new world perspective marked also of new international migratory flows intensified in the 70s, and on the Brazilian case, in the 80s, because of the context of the world crises. Fact that makes the country ceases to be noticed only as receptor of immigrants but also as provider of manpower to the more industrialized countries. The city of Governador Valadares (MG) was a connection with the United States during the 60s and in the 80s this flow takes a noticeable dimension when thousands of its inhabitants emigrated to that country, modifying the everyday life and the physical spaces of the city. Nowadays, this connection remains constant, as the telecommunication systems and the media have the potential to allow to the networks frequent connections, transcending national borders and connecting domestic webs through big distances. This paper seeks to understand how it was possible the formation of this flow and how women took part on it. With it in mind, we come back temporally to the 30s and 40s building a memory of the process of constitution of the cities, in which are noteworthy the inside experiences of migration of inhabitants that got there (attracted by the existence of natural resources and work) and the presence of North-Americans involved in the commercialization of the mica and in the refurbishment works of Estrada de Ferro Vitória Minas rails‟. In the 60s it‟s analyzed the creation of an imaginary about the United States as the Eldorado and as the Diário do Rio Doce newspaper reinforced publishing, not only extolling narratives about the society and the North-American culture, as also reports about the experience of the first exchange students of the American Field Service and of the first Valadarenses that worked as immigrants in the United States and came back to their city. To comprehend the insertion of women in this flow and their contribution in the consolidation of the networks, the paper also rebuilds the trajectories of emigration and immigration of 12 Valadarense women since their oral reports, showing how they participated in the building of this imaginary, in the building of the emigration flow that goes from this city to the United States, how they help in the maintenance of the networks that connect this city to that country and how the migratory experience allowed some of them to redefine their gender identities and their familiar relationships. As the paper shows the reports of emigratory and immigratory experiences of these women, it helps us build a feminine memory of this imigratory flow, yet noticed as eminently masculine, showing this way, the relevance of the Oral History methodology in the study of migratory movements, temporally localized in the Present TimeA emigração de brasileiros para o exterior é um fenômeno recente. O fluxo se inicia esporadicamente na década de 1960 e se intensifica ao longo da década de 1980. Na virada do século XX, esse fenômeno migratório já fazia parte do cotidiano de milhares de habitantes desta e de outras cidades brasileiras como Criciúma, Maringá, dentre outras. Essa dissertação busca analisar a configuração desse fluxo a partir da cidade de Governador Valadares, conhecida no país e no exterior pelo fluxo significativo de seus habitantes rumo aos Estados Unidos e, mais recentemente rumo a Europa. Com este movimento migratório, o Brasil insere-se na dinâmica de um novo panorama mundial marcado também por novos fluxos migratórios internacionais intensificados a partir da década de 1970, e no caso brasileiro, na década de 1980 devido ao contexto de crise econômica. Fato que faz com o país deixe de ser percebido apenas como receptor de imigrantes e passe a ser percebido também como fornecedor de mão-de-obra aos países mais industrializados. A cidade de Governador Valadares (MG) constituiu uma conexão com os Estados Unidos durante a década de 1960 e na década de 1980 este fluxo toma uma dimensão significativa quando milhares de seus habitantes emigraram para aquele país, modificando a vida cotidiana e os espaços físicos da cidade. Atualmente, esta conexão se mantém constante, na medida em que, os sistemas de telecomunicações e a mídia têm o potencial de permitir às redes sociais frequentes conexões, transcendendo fronteiras nacionais e ligando redes domésticas através de grandes distâncias. Este trabalho procura entender como foi possível a formação deste fluxo e como as mulheres participaram dele. Neste intuito, retorna-se temporalmente às décadas de 1930 e 40 construindo uma memória do processo de constituição da cidade, no qual se destaca as experiências de migração interna dos habitantes que ali chegaram (atraídos pela existência de riquezas naturais e por trabalho) e a presença de norte-americanos envolvidos na comercialização da mica e nos trabalhos de remodelação dos trilhos da Estrada de Ferro Vitória Minas. Na década de 1960 analisa-se a criação de um imaginário sobre os Estados Unidos como Eldorado e como o jornal Diário do Rio Doce reforçou-o publicizando, não só narrativas enaltecedoras sobre a sociedade e a cultura norte-americana, como também os relatos sobre as experiências dos primeiros intercambistas do American Field Service e dos primeiros valadarenses que trabalharam como imigrantes nos Estados Unidos e retornaram à cidade. Para compreender a inserção das mulheres nesse fluxo e sua contribuição na consolidação das redes sociais, o trabalho também reconstrói as trajetórias e/imigratórias de 12 mulheres valadarenses a partir de seus relatos orais, demonstrando como elas participaram na construção deste imaginário, na constituição do fluxo de emigração que parte desta cidade e ruma aos Estados Unidos, como ajudam na manutenção das redes sociais que conectam esta cidade àquele país e como a experiência da migração permitiu a algumas delas redefinirem suas identidades de gênero e suas relações familiares. Na medida em que faz circular os relatos de experiências e/imigratórias dessas mulheres, este trabalho ajuda a construir uma memória feminina deste fluxo de e/imigração, até então percebido como eminentemente masculino, demonstrando assim, a relevância da metodologia da História Oral para estudos dos movimentos migratórios temporalmente localizados no Tempo PresenteCoordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superio
