Influence of rates and placements of potassium chloride on maize germination and the diffusion of K in soils

Two experiments were conducted in a laboratory in order to evaluate, respectively, the effect of both rate and position of KCl in the germination of maize as well as the diffusion of K in five soils with variable contents of clay and organic matter. In the germination trial, thetreatments consisted of four rates of KCl, equivalent to 0, 50, 100 and 200 kg K2O ha-1, combined with two positions of the fertilizer relatively to the seeds (2.5 and 5.0 cm apart). In the other experiment, the lateral diffusion of K was measured in the soils using horizontal PVC columns (7,0 cm of diameter x 18 cm) after addition of the same rates of KCl used in the previous trial. In the soils, it was evaluated K forms (exchangeable and solution), electric conductivity and pH; in the plants, besides germination, it was measured height, shoot and root dry matter and concentration of K in the tissue. Both studies were carried out in a completely randomized design with four replicates. Maize germination was always larger than 90% and it was not affected by rates and location of KCl, regardless of soil characteristics. Shoot dry matter (SDM) had a quadratic increase in two soils with increases on the rate of KCl; in the Oxisol (LVdf), an opposite trend occurred when the fertilizer was applied 2.5 cm apart from the seeds. For the root dry matter (RDM), the interaction effect was more frequent than the isolated effect of the factors. RDM increased with the increase on the KCl rate in three soils but it decreased in the sandy Oxisol (LVd). The concentration of K in the maize tissue increased quadratically with the increase on KCl rate in all soils and it varied from 1.5 to 7.3%. The angular coefficients of the regression equations describing the relationship between exchangeable K and applied K correlated positively with the values of cation exchange capacity and organic matter, in all soils; for solution K, the coefficients did not correlate with any soil attribute. The diffusion of K varied with soil type, increased with the rate of applied KCl, and it was lowest in the sandiest soil containing the smaller organic matter content. Diffusion was fast since lateral movement of K in the treatment receiving 200 mg kg-1 K2O varied from 6.4 cm up to a maximum of 9.7 cm in only seven days, according to the soil type.Foram conduzidos dois experimentos em laboratório com o objetivo de avaliar, respectivamente, o efeito da dose e da posição do cloreto de potássio (KCl) na germinação do milho e na difusão de K em cinco solos com teores variáveis de argila e de matéria orgânica. No experimento I, avaliou-se a germinação de milho e os tratamentos consistiram de quatro doses de KCl, equivalentes a 0, 50, 100 e 200 kg ha-1 de K2O, e duas localizações laterais do fertilizante em relação às sementes (2,5 e 5,0 cm, ambas 5,0 cm abaixo das sementes). No experimento II, avaliou-se a difusão de K no solo a partir das mesmas doses de KCl, em sete distâncias lineares a partir do local de aplicação do fertilizante, em colunas horizontais de PVC (7,0 cm de diâmetro x 18 cm) confeccionadas a partir da união de anéis concêntricos. Nos solos, foram determinados os teores de K (trocável e solúvel), a condutividade elétrica e o pH; nas plantas, foram avaliadas a germinação, altura, peso da massa seca da parte aérea e raiz e a concentração foliar de K. Foi utilizado o delineamento completamente casualizado, com quatro repetições. A adição de KCl não afetou a germinação de milho em nenhum solo, sendo sempre maior do que 90%, independente da dose e da localização em relação às sementes. A massa seca da parte aérea (MSPA) aumentou quadraticamente com o aumento da dose de KCl em dois solos; no Latossolo Vermelho de textura argilosa (LVdf) ela diminuiu com o aumento da dose quando o KCl foi aplicado a 2,5 cm das sementes. A MSRA aumentou com o aumento da dose de KCl em três solos e diminuiu apenas no Latossolo Vermelho de textura arenosa (LVd). A concentração de K no tecido aumentou quadraticamente com a dose de K em todos os solos e variou de 1,5 a 7,3 %. Os coeficientes angulares das equações de regressão entre K trocável e K aplicado nos cinco solos correlacionaram positivamente com os valores de capacidade de troca de cátions e matéria orgânica; para o K-solução, os coeficientes não correlacionaram com nenhum atributo de solo. A difusão de K variou com o tipo de solo, aumentou com a dose de KCl aplicada e foi menor no solo mais arenoso e com menor teor de matéria orgânica.
