Two experiments were conducted in a laboratory in order to evaluate, respectively, the effect of both rate and position of KCl in the germination of maize as well as the diffusion of K in five soils with variable contents of clay and organic matter. In the germination trial, thetreatments consisted of four rates of KCl, equivalent to 0, 50, 100 and 200 kg K2O ha-1, combined with two positions of the fertilizer relatively to the seeds (2.5 and 5.0 cm apart). In the other experiment, the lateral diffusion of K was measured in the soils using horizontal PVC columns (7,0 cm of diameter x 18 cm) after addition of the same rates of KCl used in the previous trial.
