This work studies the use of a residual foundry sand as raw material in mortars for building material applications. The residue used (residual foundry sand) was supplied by a foundry industry from Joinville-SC and is classified as residue class II, according to the Brazilian normatization NBR 10004/87. The residue and the ordinary sand were characterized by physical tests and by chemical and morphological analyses through the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The residue was incorporated into mortars to partially replace the ordinary sand from 0,00 to 100% (in mass). The samples were cured in alkaline water immersion for 28 days.
