Utilização de areia de fundição residual para uso em argamassa

This work studies the use of a residual foundry sand as raw material in mortars for building material applications. The residue used (residual foundry sand) was supplied by a foundry industry from Joinville-SC and is classified as residue class II, according to the Brazilian normatization NBR 10004/87. The residue and the ordinary sand were characterized by physical tests and by chemical and morphological analyses through the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The residue was incorporated into mortars to partially replace the ordinary sand from 0,00 to 100% (in mass). The samples were cured in alkaline water immersion for 28 days. Samples without residue and with 30% of residue were cured naturally during six and twelve months after 28 days of cure in saturate water. After these aging times the samples were tested by uniaxial compression, analyzed by SEM and by leaching and solubilization tests. The investigation through these techniques allowed us to observe that the residue has not influence in the mechanical strength of the mortars. The binder used in the foundry sand (bentonite plus coal powder) leads to a nucleation and growth of ettringite crystals, mainly due to the presence of sulfur in the coal powder. Thus, the ettringite stabilize chemically, at least partially, the sulfur present in the residue. The ettringite contained in the mortars produced with residue turns into monossulphate with the aging time. The mortars are mainly constituted of C-S-H phases. Regarding the leaching tests it was found that, in every sample, the chemical elements analyzed all have the concentrations bellow the maximum limits established by the NBR 10004/87. The solubilization test showed that the residue concentration in mortars must be limited to avoid environmental impact. On the samples composed with 30% of residue and without residue it was found a small surplus of aluminum.Este trabalho teve por objetivo estudar a utilização da areia de fundição residual como fonte de matéria-prima para fabricação de argamassas utilizadas na construção civil. O resíduo usado neste trabalho (areia de fundição residual) foi fornecido por uma fundição de Joinville - SC e é classificado como resíduo classe II, conforme NBR 10004/87. A areia residual de fundição (resíduo) e a areia de construção civil (areia comum) foram caracterizadas por meio de ensaios físicos, análise morfológica e análise qualitativa, realizados com auxílio de microscopia eletrônica de varredura e pela micro análise de EDX. O resíduo estudado foi usado como agregado em substituição à areia comum em porcentagens que variaram de 0 a 100% em massa. Os corpos-de-prova foram curados sob imersão em água alcalina por 28 dias. Corpos-de-prova sem resíduo e com 30% de resíduo foram envelhecidos naturalmente por seis e doze meses após 28 dias de cura saturada. Após a cura, foram testados em compressão uniaxial, posteriormente analisados por microscopia eletrônica de varredura e ensaios de lixiviação, análise de massa e solubilização. A investigação por intermédio dessas técnicas de caracterização nos permitiu observar que não existe influência significativa do resíduo areia de fundição na resistência mecânica das argamassas. O aglomerante utilizado na areia de fundição (bentonita e pó de carvão) favorecem a germinação e crescimento de cristais de etringita, principalmente por causa da presença de enxofre no pó de carvão. Com o tempo, a etringita presente nas argamassas com resíduo se transforma em monossulfato. As argamassas curadas são formadas principalmente de silicatos de cálcio hidratados (fases C-S-H). Com relação aos ensaios de lixiviação e análise de massa, foi observado que todos os elementos químicos analisados estão abaixo do máximo estabelecido pela NBR 10004/87. Os ensaios de solubilização mostraram que a adição de resíduo na argamassa deve ser limitada para evitar impacto ambiental. Nas amostras de argamassa com 30% de resíduo e sem resíduo tem-se um pequeno excesso de alumínio.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superio
