Bridging Gender Gaps? The Rise and Deceleration of Female Labor Force Participation in Latin America: An overview

En la década del sesenta dos de cada diez mujeres adultas en Brasil formaban parte de la fuerza de trabajo. Medio siglo después, esta proporción ha aumentado fuertemente, escalando a siete de cada diez mujeres adultas. Esta tendencia se ha manifestado en todos los países latinoamericanos, aunque con diferentes intensidades. En comparación con algunas décadas atrás, hoy las mujeres de la región dedican una mayor cantidad de su tiempo a trabajar en el mercado laboral. De hecho, si bien la brecha en la participación laboral entre hombres y mujeres en América Latina todavía está lejos de cerrarse y continúa entre las más altas del mundo, en el último medio siglo se ha reducido considerablemente. El fuerte incremento de la participación laboral femenina (PLF) constituye uno de los fenómenos socioeconómicos más sobresalientes en América Latina en el último medio siglo. Este cambio no sólo implica una intensa transformación en la vida diaria de millones de mujeres y familias, sino que también tiene importantes consecuencias laborales, sociales y económicas a nivel global. La pobreza, la desigualdad, el desempleo y la educación, por nombrar solo algunas de las temáticas sociales más importantes, se ven significativamente afectadas por la mayor entrada de la mujer a la fuerza laboral.During the 1960s, two out of ten adult women in Brazil were in the labor force, either employed or actively seeking a job; half a century later this figure has risen dramatically, climbing to seven out of ten. Similar transformations have been observed throughout Latin America, although the intensity of the change has varied by country. Compared to a few decades ago, women in the region now allocate a larger share of their time to market activities than working at home. The gap between men and women’s labor participation remains far from being closed and it is still larger than in several regions of the world, but it has shrunk substantially. Arguably, the strong increase in female labor force participation (LFP) is among the most salient socioeconomic changes in Latin America in the last half-century. This fact not only implies a profound transformation in the daily life of millions of Latin American women and families, but it also has substantial economy-wide labor and social consequences. Poverty, inequality, unemployment and education–just to mention a few social issues—are all affected by the growing presence of women in the workforce.Este documento corresponde al capítulo 1 del libro Gasparini and Marchionni (eds.)
