En la década del sesenta dos de cada diez mujeres adultas en Brasil formaban parte de la fuerza de trabajo. Medio siglo después, esta proporción ha aumentado fuertemente, escalando a siete de cada diez mujeres adultas. Esta tendencia se ha manifestado en todos los países latinoamericanos, aunque con diferentes intensidades. En comparación con algunas décadas atrás, hoy las mujeres de la región dedican una mayor cantidad de su tiempo a trabajar en el mercado laboral.
