This activity from the Florida Advanced Technological Education (FLATE) Center asks students to "engineer and manufacture a light-emitting diode (LED) using a simple circuit." The class reviews electrical circuit concepts before studying circuit diagrams and then building a circuit in groups. Finally, groups compare their experiences and results and report on their findings, including recommendations and what they learned. The activity is designed for middle school, or grades 6 through 8, and requires an understanding of "basic concepts of electrons, atoms, current, measurement and units." The page includes a lesson plan, lecture slides, a student worksheet, a grading rubric, and reference sheet. Â
