According to the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN), umbrella organization for geographical name standardization, a gazetteer is a list of toponyms arranged in alphabetic or other order, with data about their position, object and if possible, variations, and it also contains other information. A gazetteer contains reference data which are used together with a map. Nevertheless, geographical names are not just a part of a map; they are an important communication means which reflects the historical and cultural development of an area. The Croatian Geodetic Institute published the Gazetteer of the Republic of Croatia at http://cgnd.cgi.hr:8081.Prema United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN), krovnoj organizaciji za normizaciju geografskih imena, registar geografskih imena je popis toponima uređen po abecednom ili drugom redoslijedu s podacima o njihovom položaju, objektu i po mogućnosti njihovim varijacijama, a sadrži i druge informacije. Registar geografskih imena sadrži referentne podatke koji se koriste povezani s kartom. Međutim, geografska imena nisu samo dio karte, ona su važno komunikacijsko sredstvo koje odražava povijesni i kulturni razvoj nekog područja.
