«Industrial Art on the path of Classicism». Modern story of an ancient Venus from Herculaneum

The s.c. “Sandalbinder Venus” has to be considered one of the most widespread and popular sculptural types from Hellenistic and Roman-era, as testified by hundreds of replicas. Imitations and adaptations inspired by this ancient model have been produced in modern times since the Renaissance. Between the end of the XIX and the beginning of the XX century, the diffusion of a large number of copies of a statuette discovered in Herculaneum in 1757 marks a renewed success of the type. This development can be traced back to the activity of some Neapolitan art foundries – Chiurazzi, De Angelis and Sommer above all – operating in the reproduction of original archaeological works from the Vesuvian area. The analysis of this case study can contribute to understand the evolution of the «industrial art on the path of classicism», considering implications related to the reproduction, forgery and antiquities collecting, but also to the reception of ancient art within modern visual culture.Come testimoniato dall’esistenza di centinaia di repliche, quello della c.d. “Venere che si slaccia il sandalo” deve essere considerato tra i più diffusi e popolari tipi scultorei di età ellenistica e romana: imitazioni e adattamenti ispirati a questo antico modello sono state prodotte in epoca moderna fin dal Rinascimento. Una rinnovata fase di questo successo, tra la fine del XIX e l’inizio del XX sec., è marcata dalla diffusione di un gran numero di copie di una statuetta rinvenuta ad Ercolano nel 1757. Le origini di tale sviluppo possono essere ricondotte all’attività di alcune fonderie artistiche napoletane - Chiurazzi, De Angelis e Sommer soprattutto - attive nella riproduzione di opere archeologiche provenienti dall’area vesuviana. Attraverso questo caso studio, l’articolo intende seguire l’evoluzione dell’«arte industriale sulla via del classicismo», considerando le sue implicazioni legate alla riproduzione, falsificazione e collezionismo di antichità, ma anche alla ricezione delle forme dell’arte antica all’interno della cultura visuale moderna
