Graded compression stockings are commonly used to prevent deep‐vein thrombosis (DVT) after stroke, but their efficacy in this setting has not been evaluated. Extrapolation of effectiveness from trials in patients undergoing elective surgery may be inappropriate. We undertook a randomized, controlled trial, with blinded data review, in a University hospital Acute Stroke Unit. Patients were allocated to graded compression stockings or to standard care alone. DVT incidence was determined at baseline and at day 7±2 by colour‐flow Doppler ultrasound. Ninety‐eight patients with acute, immobilizing stroke were randomized; 97 had full outcome data.
