Sustainable Higher Education: A First, Systematic Literature Review on Information Security Management

When declined in its three traditional components, confidentiality, integrity and availability, information security is an essential element of sustainable work practices. Modern higher education manages large amounts of data and information, whose preservation is fundamental to its sustainability. In order to synthesise research that, to date, has investigated how universities manage information security, this systematic literature review examines 40 papers published in the last thirteen years, and tries to expand understanding of the sub-topics, perspectives, methodologies, and trends that characterise this field of investigation. Literature gaps are highlighted and avenues for further work proposed. First of its kind, this review concludes that information security management in higher education is a highly under-investigated topic, with extensive potential for collaboration with practitioners in the field
