A comparative analysis of the nature of conduct in war by the Normans across the wide geographical range of their conquests, from the conflicts of the emerging duchy of Normandy with its rival territorial neighbours in northern France, to Norman conquests in southern Italy and Sicily, as well as in Britain. It demonstrates how conventions of siege and surrender, as well as the treatment of the vanquished and of prisoners (including the critical issue of the enslavement of captives) were adapted to reflect the varying cultural and religious aspects of their opponents
