Putative properties of the ‘ideal’ lung injury biomarker include high sensitivity and specificity, variation in proportion to the severity of injury and association with clinically important outcomes. We tested the performance of the novel lung injury biomarker Pentraxin 3 (PTX3) against these properties in a human one-lung ventilation (OLV) model of lung injury. PTX3 is produced locally in the lung in response to tissue injury and has a biologically plausible role in the pathogenesis of lung injury
