Stenosis of the renal artery is a common medical condition, caused by atherosclerotic vascular disease in older patients, and fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) in young individuals. Stenosis can cause hypertension, heart failure, and progressive chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, in many patients renal artery stenosis (RAS) is silent, accompanying disseminated atherosclerotic vascular disease in other territories. Despite advances in imaging technology that detect structural renal artery disease, the diagnosis of functional disease remains complex, and controversy remains over whether, when and how to treat atheromatous RAS
