In theory, schooling acts as a powerful mediating institution between migrant families and their children and the social and political contexts in which they arrive. Yet we know that migrants often leave schooling with increased disadvantages, rather than enhanced opportunities. Advances in migration studies suggest that this may be connected to the gap between research in education and knowledge about the interaction of migration and the broader social, economic and political contexts in which migrants and schooling are located. This may lead to the repetition of unsuccessful pedagogic initiatives at the school level
