A comparative study of the manuscript and printed sources of Haydn’s Scottish songs and variations composed for Edinburgh publisher George Thomson between 1800 and 1802, proves that some of Haydn’s arrangements were substantially revised prior to publication. While some of these variants represent editorial revisions made unilaterally by Thomson without Haydn’s authority or approval, there is clear evidence in the correspondence and in the manuscripts themselves to indicate that a number of revisions, notably eight of the violin parts published in Thomson’s Select Collection of Original Scotish Airs (vol. III of 1802), are almost certainly the work of Haydn
